Wake Up, Church: Living as Children of Light in Dark TImes
We're living in extraordinary times. The darkness seems to press in from every side—corruption in high places, families torn apart, communities crumbling under the weight of deception. Yet in the midst of it all, there's a clarion call echoing through the ages: Wake up. Watch. Be sober. Be ready.
The Watchman's Call
The apostle Paul wrote to the Thessalonian church with urgency: "But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light and the children of the day" (1 Thessalonians 5:4-5). This wasn't merely encouragement—it was a summons to action.
In ancient times, cities built massive walls for protection, and watchmen stood guard on those walls. Their job was simple but critical: stay awake and sound the alarm when danger approached. If a watchman fell asleep at his post, the consequences could be catastrophic. An enemy could breach the gates, and no one would know until it was too late.
Today, believers are the watchmen on the wall. We've been positioned in this moment of history—not by accident, but by divine appointment—to recognize the enemy's approach and sound the alarm. The question is: Are we awake, or have we been lulled to sleep?
The Danger of Passivity
Passivity is one of the greatest threats to the church today. It's the comfortable lie that whispers, "There's nothing you can do. Just wait it out." But faith has never been passive. Faith moves. Faith acts. Faith believes the Word of God enough to step out in obedience, even when the path ahead seems uncertain.
We've become experts at hearing alarms without responding to them. Like sailors who've heard the warning bells so many times they sleep right through them, many believers have grown numb to the spiritual warnings all around us. We see the signs of the times, we recognize the darkness encroaching, but we've convinced ourselves that our response doesn't matter.
This is precisely the moment when we need to shake off complacency and remember who we are.
Children of Light
Our identity isn't rooted in what we do—it's rooted in who God has made us to be. When Christ redeemed us, He didn't just forgive our sins; He transformed our very nature. We became children of light, citizens of the day, carriers of divine truth in a world that increasingly prefers darkness.
Ephesians 5:8 declares, "For you were sometimes darkness, but now you're light in the Lord. Walk as children of light." This isn't merely poetic language—it's a statement of reality. Light, by its very nature, exposes what's hidden. It reveals truth. It illuminates deception.
And darkness hates it.
Don't be surprised when your presence makes people uncomfortable. Don't be shocked when speaking truth gets you labeled as intolerant or judgmental. Light always disturbs those who prefer shadows. Like mice scurrying when a light switch flips on, those who operate in darkness will recoil from the truth you carry.
But that's exactly why we must not dim our light or apologize for it.
The Battle We're In
Make no mistake: we're in a war. This isn't hyperbole or religious dramatics—it's biblical reality. Moses called God "a man of war" (Exodus 15:3). Paul consistently wrote about spiritual warfare in his letters. The Christian life isn't a peaceful stroll through a garden; it's an active engagement against forces of darkness that seek to steal, kill, and destroy.
The enemy's strategy is brilliant in its simplicity: convince believers they're powerless. Lull them into thinking their prayers don't matter, their witness is ineffective, and their efforts are futile. Keep them defensive, always reacting, never advancing.
But Scripture paints a different picture. We're not called to huddle in fear, waiting for the enemy's next attack. We're called to put on the full armor of God and go on the offensive. The breastplate of faith and love protects our hearts. The helmet of salvation guards our minds against the enemy's lies about our identity. And we're equipped with weapons that are "mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds" (2 Corinthians 10:4).
When Nehemiah's people rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, they didn't just defend—they worked with a tool in one hand and a sword in the other. They built while they fought. They advanced while they guarded. This is the posture we need today.
Taking Ground
How much ground have we surrendered? How many families have we watched fall apart without fighting for them in prayer? How many communities have we seen overtaken by darkness while we remained passive observers? How many friends and neighbors have we allowed to slip into eternity without ever sharing the hope we carry?
Jesus gave us authority "to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy" (Luke 10:19). He commissioned us to cast out demons, heal the sick, and preach the gospel with signs following. This isn't a calling reserved for super-spiritual Christians—it's the birthright of every believer.
Your prayers are not ineffective. Your witness is not worthless. Your stand for truth is not in vain. In the heavenly realms, every act of faith, every declaration of truth, every battle fought in prayer is making a difference. You may not see the roots growing beneath the soil, but that doesn't mean nothing is happening.
The Time Is Now
We're living in the days of Judges, when "everyone did what was right in their own eyes." We're witnessing the fulfillment of prophecies spoken thousands of years ago. The scoffers Peter warned about are mocking the idea that Christ will return. The false peace and safety Paul mentioned are being proclaimed from every platform.
But we know better. We're children of the light, and we can see what's really happening. The day of the Lord approaches like a thief in the night for those in darkness, but not for us. We're awake. We're watching. We're ready.
The question is: What will we do with the time we have left?
Will we waste it on entertainment and distractions, or will we devote ourselves to prayer and warfare? Will we stay defensive, or will we take ground? Will we shrink back in fear, or will we stand bold as lions?
This is your moment. This is your mission. You are the watchman on the wall, and it's time to sound the alarm.
Wake up, church. The day is coming soon.
